This past winter, I responded to an ad on Craiglist for a 16mm Bolex motion picture camera. I knew very little about them other than having to wind them up to shoot 30 seconds at a time. The camera features a turret style lens deal and I wound up with the 3 lenses out of the sale.

Though it wasn’t that expensive, I still struggled with justifying the purchase for days. Was I actually gonna get into this? Had this “photography” business finally gone too far?

Weeks went by before I finally got the courage to buy a spool of film for the camera. Thankfully, MTL is movie town and you can not only get film pretty easily, you can even have it processed and transferred to a hard drive for editing quickly, right here as well.

More weeks went by. I was trying to finish an album. I was also scared to shoot some motion picture film. I was afraid of the gong show that would follow; of failing and the discouragement that would come with it.

Finally, I had a modest idea for a short promo clip for the first track on the album. I have been involved with over a dozen music vids before. They almost always involved thousands of dollars and guys standing around looking for something to do.

I didn’t have thousands of dollars to make this film. I picked up 6 more rolls of Vision 3 200T for a total of 700 feet of film. At 24 frames per second, that comes out to about 21 minutes of film. That is not alot. Very tiny margin for error.

I tried to get some help to make the thing, knowing full well that “money talks, bullshit walks.” Throw in a really inexperienced director wanting shoot film instead of fool proof digital and it decreases one’s chance of anyone showing up to the shoot by a thousand.

Instead, the day was saved by my bros Andrew and John, a couple of shutterbugs themselves. There was a moment when all three of us were actually googling “Bolex h16.” It reminded me of the story of Woody Allen reading “How To Direct A Movie,” on the night before his first directing gig. In addition Natalia “kid wrangled,” did make-up, and catering. That was it, man. John split at 2am, Andrew at 3, and I got a cab at 4.

Finally, our boy Paul Tom edited the thing from a very very rough cut, sprinkled his magic.
